Account of Shootday 1

  • For this day we knew that it was going to be used for all the spray painting shots, such as over the shoulder, point of view shot and side view shot. This is because we had to have a specific day to use the walls because they were being knocked down. This shows that we are organised because we planned in advance as to when the filming needed to take place
  • In order to prepare for this shoot day we made sure that Dani had practiced her lyrics for the chorus. This is because the spray painting location is going to be within the chorus. This was necessary because it enabled less time wasted on learning the chorus on the day and hence leaves us with more time to shoot.
  • Our animatic prepared us well for our shoot day because it showed us at which time in the song there need to be a certain shot. For example, at 1:05 an extreme close up was noted. This wasn't exact, although it was a base line at where we needed to begin. Having the story board was very useful on the day because it would tell us as a group if we have missed out any shots and if we needed to film anymore. For example, how many close ups we needed of her spray paining. Also once filmed, we didn't do an over the shoulder shot of her spraying, which shows the story board was useful as it showed us what we were missing.
  • The filming on this day went very well because as a group we were very organised. For example, before filming we made sure we practiced with the spray paint and did a rough plan of what Dani would be spraying. This was necessary because it made sure that Dani wouldn't make a mistake and knew how far away she needed to spray from the walls.
  • The additional shots that we added was a side view of Dani and a point of view shot
  • We added a point of view shot, where it looked like she was recording herself by holding the camera. We recorded this because because it was very effective and made the music video more interesting. When Dani holds the camera it allows it to be more personal and therefore can connect with the audience at a more personal level.
  • Dani was very sufficient on this filming day as she understood everything we told her to do and also did what felt right when she singing, e.g. how much she should move around or look at the camera
  • A problem in which we encountered was that by the ending of using the spray paint, it gave off a very strong smell so to prevent headache we had to open the windows to have some fresh air for the group.
  • The shots that worked much better than expected was the medium close ups and the close ups. This is because her face was very focused with clear lip syncing. Also in the background was the spray paint which was a very effective background for the shots.
  • We managed our time sufficiently, making sure we filmed a range of shots. For example we filmed more or less all the shots (close up, medium, extreme, over the shoulder, tracking) in order to make it easier for us when editing because this gave us a range of footage to use when editing.
  • For this day we all mainly had an equal role. I helped set up the camera and we all took turns in holding the light because the light wasn't fitting onto the light stand. As well as this, i had an input of what Dani should be spraying onto the wall. For example, i told her to spray the broken heart in order to emphasise that the narrative was about breakup. After filming we all helped pack away and discuss what we needed to do for the next filming day.

Research Into Tour Locations

Our artist 'Dani' is a new upcoming artist therefore research is needed to look into similar artists who are also on the same platform as her.

Location for an artist who is up coming
- smaller size
- Locations need to be geographically align. For example, if artist was performing in Edinburgh it would not be sensible to travel to Brighton the next day as this would be a very long journey.

Locations:

  1. Concord 2- Brighton STEFFLON DON
  2. O2 Forum- Kentish Town MABEL
  3. 02 Academy- Oxford  JORJA SMITH
  4. Hare and Hounds- Birmingham COL3TRANE
  5. Rescue Rooms- Nottingham MABEL
  6. Academy 1-Manchester NINA NESBIT
  7. Invisible Wind Factory- Liverpool JORJA SMITH

This is going to be the route that Dani is going to take on her Tour in the United Kingdom. This is a good route because they are all geographically aligned and each location is not too far from one another. Therefore Dani will not have to travel too far between each one. When creating this route we also clicked 'hotels' so Dani can have a good indication as to where she can stay when she goes there.
The reason behind these locations is because these are a couple of the major cities in England and has good small scale venues that many up coming artist use. For example, Mabel and Jorja Smith perform in small scale venues, so it was appropiagte to include the venues

Websites Similar to our Artist

  • Louisa Johnson only just recently got into the music industry. This happened because she won X factor in 2015. Therefore she is not an old music artist; she is upcoming
  • It was appropriate to look at Louisa's website because it is an example of a new artist, just like Dani is
  • Her website it simple, yet effective which is what we were aiming for. Therefore we are going to use this similar design with a basic picture
  • The vignette is also very effective for the front page, we are going to attempt this technique in photoshop.
  • The layout is also very simple with clear tabs on show. Therefore because they are both upcoming artists we will make an easy website which is clear to understand.

Ultimately for pop stars in the last couple of years, a website is largely redundant and it used for to send target audience onto other social media networks. For example, with Louisa Johnson, the website is just a front page with a picture, however its links take you to other social media forms, which is where she interacts with her target audience. If we had the opportunity, we would be trying to engage our audience across social media platforms such as Snap Chat, instagram, Facebook and to a lesser extent Twitter. It is these media forms that an audience of teens would naturally converge on, not a website.

Mike Masnick argues that pop stars in the 21st century need to connect with their fans and to give them a reason to pay. What this means is the audience expects everything for free, or at a massively reduced costs to the 20th century. So, in order to get our audiences to pay, you need to encourage the audience to connect with you. Social media platforms are key to this form of engagement as artists can directly interact with the audience. For example, you can tweet a pop star and they may respond. Equally, they can update you 24/7 and give you access to the unseen footage that would previously be designed from platforms such as Instagram and Snap Chat. As universal music groups, Chief executive officer, David Joseph  states "For pop stars to succeed in the 21st century they need to havre a carefully co- ordinated campaign across all social media platforms as music is now only one part of an artists appeal" Therefore, as we can see with Louisa Johnson the website itself is just a platform used to send potential fans towards her social media accounts.

For our artist, Dani Alexander, we will be integrating these social media links as well as Spotify so that we can sell her across a range of platforms. As Henry Jenkins states "media convergence is the ability to tell a story across a range of platforms" We aim to demonstrate that our artist is using convergent technologies In order to sell her story across a range of platforms. In addition, we feel that as music no longer makes money for the artist and the record company we need to create merchandise in order to market and sell her to the audience, therefore we have added a merchandise page to her website as well as a tour page so that fans can also see that she is an artist that will play live. As live performance is one of the keys ways artists makes money in the 21st century.

Lip Syncing Auditions

When analysing the auditions we took into consideration the lip syncing. We concluded as a group that Dani was the best. This is because she was most in sync with the lyrics, which is what is needed in order for the music video to be successful. Amber performed the worst lip sync because she was very out of time, making it not pleasing to look at. It was easy for us to make a decision at who was going to sing in our music video because the performances were drastically different in how good they did it. Also, in this video Dani was the most confident and we know this due to her movements, whereas the other two girls were less confident in front of the camera which is not idea for our music video. So, Dani is who we are going to use in our music video based on two things: confidence and the ability to lip sync.

Last Minute Changes before Filming

We originally had Molly, but due to certain circumstances she was unable to be in our music video. We quickly got organised a asked a friend who sings to be the singer. Dani is 17 years old and is therefore the appropriate age as she fits in within our target audience. She is very confident, so she will not be shy to sing in front of the camera, which is just what we need!

We have asked in in advance to be free on the days we are filming and the times which we need her to and from. Dani also goes to our school, which is very convenient because one of the locations in our music video is the studio, which the school have. We will do this when we all have frees so that we don't have to go into lesson time. '

When filming Dani is going to wear make up, which will be eye catching; along with red lipstick to emphasise her star image. She is going to wear separate outfits in the chorus to when she is in the other locations.

Planning for our Film Day

As one of our locations to film in had a deadline, it was crucial for our group to plan beforehand and be organised. In order to do this we messaged our Actors to see when they were available to film. This worked well as Benjy told us the days he could not do and so we planned our own Film day around his. However, through this organisation, we realised that Molly would not be very Reliable as she was not able to film on the days of which we needed to. Because of this, Our group decided to change Artists to someone who would be able to film on the days of which we needed to.
